The Daffodil Growing Season – When Do Daffodils Bloom?
The daffodil has a growing season similar to many other spring flowering bulbs. It begins growth in late winter, the green growing tips often poking up through light snows. As long as flower buds are not visible don’t worry about this, the plant can protect itself against normal winter cold. Extreme temperatures may cause some damage. Snow cover helps.

Caring for Daffodils
Daffodils planted in reasonably good garden soil really don’t require a lot of care. Do not cut, braid, or fold the foliage back after bloom. The daffodils need all the nutrients they can get by soaking up the sun’s rays with their leaves.

Grape Hyacinth
Grape Hyacinth is one of the more popular flowering spring bulbs which has become naturalized in many areas here in Indiana. Old home sites in which the house and all buildings have disappeared still sport the cobalt blue hyacinth flowers each spring. The bulbs spread by offshoots and reseeding themselves.

Daffodil or Narcissus
The daffodil, or narcissus, is a spring flowering bulb which is quite perennial in northern gardens. North of USDA Zone 8 is their recommended range. They are native to Europe, the Mediterranean region and western Asia. Their height ranges from six to twelve inches. Flower colors are mostly various shades of yellow, but there are whites, reds, oranges, and pinks. The flowers of some varieties are sweetly scented.
