Designed by German landscape architect George Edward Kessler, the botanical garden opened on October 29, 1916.

Audubon Swamp Garden – Nature Trail Hike In A Cypress Swamp © 2006

Much of the hike is over boardwalk, dike and roadway, so your feet stay on dry ground almost for the entire trail. Giant cypress trees emerge from the black water of the swamp and dozens of varieties of birds roost and fly over the waters and turtles bask in the warm sun on logs. The Audubon Swamp Garden park has a surreal beauty of nature which we have found on very few trails.
