Garden Sundials
A sundial in the garden can serve some practical as well as cosmetic purposes. It is not only decorative, but useful as well. It can, on a sunny day, tell you what time it is as long as you don’t need to know precisely. It operates every day using no electricity and adding old fashioned charm to the garden. Thunbergia or morning glory planted at the sundial base in the spring adds to the charm. By mid summer the sundial is covered with the cheery yellow flowers. This year has been unusually cool and rainy and the thunbergia has been very slow to grow and bloom.
If you are seeking to add a sundial to your garden, you will be interested to know several things before you do. There are two basic styles of sundial, armillary or equatorial, and disc. Each has its advantages and charm and will be discussed in following posts. Sundials are also made from different materials, the metals brass, cast iron and aluminum being used the most. All are quite weather resistant and hold up well over time. Other materials like ceramic, terra cotta and plastic may also be used to make garden sundials.
